Human Trafficking Awareness Day
Human trafficking is a growing business in our world. It is a lucrative business for those in control. It is a heart breaking, soul suffocating life for those who are being used and abused.
When we hear the statistics…
► 800,000 to 900,000 victims trafficked annually across international
borders worldwide,
► 18,000 to 20,000 of those victims are trafficked into the U.S.,
we want to know, “How can we help stop this injustice?”
First, we need to get educated on the signs and indications of trafficking. Then we need to help raise community awareness. Below are several ways you can begin to show you care.
• A discussion on trafficking will be held at 7:00 p.m. Sunday, January 16, at First United Methodist Church of Birmingham, led by the Michigan director of the anti-trafficking organization Not For Sale, Rev. Momany.
• The Community Coalition Against Human Trafficking is urging persons to wear white on January 11, 2011, uniting us all in our desire to combat human trafficking. Charity events use colors to raise awareness about their cause and since our mission is to be the light in the darkness…our color is white. How powerful and significant it will be for an entire nation of participants to wear white on the same day, to be the voice for those who cannot speak for themselves. Be the voice. Spread the word. Unite and wear white on 1/11/11.
• The Not for Sale Campaign is asking for a moment of silence
at 11:00 a.m. on Human Trafficking Awareness Day,
January 11, 2011 (1-11-11). Take a moment to pray for human trafficking victims and the resolution of this tragic problem.
You can become a part of the solution!
Break the Chains: Slavery in the 21st Century
In 2007 ABW Ministries launched its
“Break the Chains: Slavery in the 21st Century”
project with a goal of raising $250,000 to encourage new ministries dedicated to ending sex trafficking in the U.S. and in other countries.
To date, over $480,000 has been raised—praise God!
Realizing that the work has just begun, ABW Ministries have elected to continue the project with a new focus,
“Break the Chains and Stop the Pain,”
dedicated to ending oppression of women and girls worldwide.
In 2011 the focus will be on violence. Significant numbers of the world’s population are routinely subject to torture, starvation, terrorism, humiliation, mutilation and even murder simply because they are female. Simply being female puts over half of the world’s population at risk for violence in their homes, on the streets, in our neighborhoods and throughout the world. Sometimes the violence is perpetrated by individuals, other times it is the result of cultural values and traditions.
Engaging in education, awareness-raising and violence prevention initiatives, victim care, and outreach to at-risk women and girls can bring hope and relief. In 2011, grants distributed from the Break the Chains project will provide encouragement and seed monies for ministries by individuals or organizations that seek to end violence against women and girls.
Once again, we have set a two-year goal of $250,000. Please help us continue to break the chains of oppression worldwide!
The Community Coalition Against Human Trafficking has asked persons to wear white on January 11, 2011, uniting us all in our desire to combat human trafficking. We know there will be varied anti trafficking events taking place throughout the entire month;
but on this day, we believe there is power in sharing one voice to raise awareness.
