First Baptist Church of Birmingham, Michigan
Youth Activities
We strive to hold an event each month, on Friday evening or Saturday, with a mix of fun, missional, and educational opportunities such as skating at Campus Martius downtown, attending services at churches of different faiths, Greening of Detroit, Gleaners, and Laser Tag. This past year (2010) our lounge area was redecorated and refurbished, with the creation of an art room and game room behind the lounge.
Sunday Morning Children and Youth Opportunities
While Cole or Samantha Middleditch manage the nursery, Francie Middleditch helps the preschool and lower elementary children begin building a strong faith foundation using materials from a curriculum called “Rock Solid” from Cokesbury. Through crafts, stories, and games, they had a chance to meet God and Jesus.
Keely Tyson works with the upper elementary and middle school youth using the David C. Cook Bible in Life series as well as other materials. They experience the Bible and Christ through ritual, prayer, crafts, Bible study, and discussions relevant to every day life. Last fall they looked at the book of Exodus and then had a movie night watching “The Ten Commandments”.
Joan Moore leads the high school group with discussions and writing their own essays on challenging issues. Last spring their topic was peace, considering such aspects as what causes peace and how poverty disrupts peace. They presented their thoughtful compositions on peace during a Sunday morning worship service where they provided the day’s message.
Sunday Morning Adult Opportunities
The Christian Forum class is usually led by Jim Poe in the winter and spring using the Judson Bible Journeys series. Then in the summer and fall, Phyllis Bourgois leads the class with her own materials. In 2010 she presented lessons on some of the letters of Paul.
A class usually led by Pastor Wes Babian meets in the parlor to discuss relevant books or topics.
Additional educational opportunities for adults are available during the week. Pastor Babian provides in depth Bible study in small groups that met on Tuesday mornings and Thursday evenings. They are currently (winter 2011) studying the book of Hebrews.
